Turnover Presents Opportunities

Turnover Presents Opportunities The news is filled with grim statistics on job growth these days.    It’s true that companies have not been creating many new jobs, and that makes it harder for jobseekers who are trying to decide where to find opportunities.   It’s not surprising that jobs are coming back slowly after this brutal recession.   Employers are reluctant to hire again with regulatory uncertainty looming; changes to healthcare requirements and other federal programs make it hard to predict costs in the future.   In addition, companies that discovered efficiencies in their workforce (finding that the job gets done with three workers instead of the previous four) are loath to give up that productivity when things improve.   But just because there are no new jobs does not mean that there’s no hiring going on.   As the economy starts to improve, workers are going to leave their current jobs for what they consider better jobs. According to a recent workplace survey for Adecco, conducted by Harris Interactive, the majority of U.S. workers are unhappy with their current job situation: 66 percent are dissatisfied with their compensation. 76 percent are dissatisfied with their opportunities for career growth. 78 percent are dissatisfied with the retention efforts made on behalf of their employers. These results mean that people are looking for other opportunities.   Many workers took jobs that didn’t pay what they wanted or were in industries they don’t care about simply to get through this economic downturn.    They will be ready to make a move as soon as one presents itself.   That means that you should be ready, too.   Step up your networking â€" focus on asking people if they know someone who’s gotten a job recently.   (I’ll bet there are more of them than you’d think.)   Step up your efforts to follow companies and people on LinkedIn and other social networking sites â€" keep track of changes in employment status. Turnover presents different challenges in your job search â€" the jobs don’t always hit the street in public postings.   These jobs are the classic “hidden job market.”   People start to talk about openings before they’re advertised; insiders or friends of friends will know there’s going to be an opening before the job gets posted.    Keep your ears open for leads about turnover in any company â€" you never know where the next lead will come from, or where someone you know   or have worked with in the past will land.

How Will Technology Play a Role in the Future of Recruiting

How Will Technology Play a Role in the Future of Recruiting The rapid pace of technology has transformed many aspects of work, and life for that matter. We are more productive, efficient and innovative because of it, and the recruitment industry has been no  exception to it. Candidates have never been more accessible, and the rise of mobile  and social media has truly altered the ways in which we now recruit top talent. So with technology already changing and improving many aspects of our recruitment process, our highly experienced panel of technology experts discuss how they envisage technology  playing a role in the future of recruitment. Jonathan Kestenbaum Technology will help lower operating costs and, in my mind, it will empower recruiters to go from “the hunters” to “the hunted.” In 2020, recruiters will be like sports agents, and all of the available technology will arm them with the ability to engage, assess and collect data about candidates at scale, leaving them to focus on the important stuff building relationships. Jonathan Kestenbaum, Executive Director, Talent Tech Labs Cheryl Cran   Right now LinkedIn, and other social media plays a dominant role in recruiting, including Salesforce for HR, Glassdoor and more. In the future AI will scour potential candidates through profiles on social media and provide aggregate suggestions for a new career based on social activity, and will also provide aggregate content to potential employers. Cheryl Cran, CEO Future of Work Expert, Synthesis at Work Inc Nathan Perrott There are two fundamental ways it will play a role. First, it will help remove process admin related tasks through automation, freeing up recruiters to focus on the more human elements, such as relationship building. Technology will enable recruiters to add value to the candidate experience, which is much needed for many employers. Secondly, technology will play a vital role in providing candidates with the digital experience they expect and receive in the consumer space nowadays, whatever stage of the process they’re in. Nathan Perrott, Director of Digital Marketing Strategy, AIA Worldwide Adam Glassman In the next 12-24 months, you’re going to see a dramatic jump in the technology available to Talent Acquisition professionals. With the likes of Google, Microsoft and Facebook joining the fray â€" plus the rise of personalization and artificial intelligence tools â€" technology in this space will boom. And that, with no hyperbole, will be awesome for us. Adam Glassman, Recruitment Strategies Manager, Alorica Hung Lee There are a number of technology trends which are likely to break through over the next decade. Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, 3D printing, cybernetics, AR/VR each of these has the potential to be at least as disruptive as internet or email was in the late 90’s and social networking or the cloud was in early 2010. Taken together, they point to a revolution in how our society might be organised, with far reaching transformation of work and our relationship with it. Hung Lee, CEO, WorkShape.io Chris Russell Technology is becoming more pervasive in the recruiting world at an increasing pace. It will transform the way we recruit by making it easier to identify and source talent faster than ever before. Chris Russell, Managing Director, RecTech Media Bryan Chaney Our expectations of human interaction in recruiting are changing every day. We’re starting to make peace with automated email confirmations, scripted screening questions, and resume/CV reviewing algorithms telling us we’re not a fit. I see chat-bots  playing a bigger role in answering questions about a company, the company’s employees, and ultimately a specific open role on the career site. I also see AI technology helping us  detect career patterns and paths so we can more intelligently source people in roles and companies who are likely going to be skilled for future roles that they’ve never even considered. There are multiple tests available to check a person’s attitude towards a certain kind of career opportunity. Additionally, there are counselors that can help you figure this out.You can also find free online aptitude test that can rate you based on your skills. b) Interest and Drive: evalIt is important to identify your areas of interest. As Mark Twain once famously said, “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This, basically, means that you will need to identify what interests you and what you believe you will enjoy doing for a long time to come. You will need the drive to put your head down and stick to the plan and execute it, and there is no substitute for giving it everything you have.c) Economics: As much as one might be as optimistic about the monies involved in following the dream; it is important to remember that it is an important aspect of any chase to follow through with you r dream. The mo re you learn the better you get at your job. f) Practice:There is a reason why the slogan “Practice makes a man perfect” was created. Be it sports or creativity there is a lot of stress on continuous practice. When you practice long and hard, it opens a world of different solutions as you practice for and make up different solutions for the same problem. Therefore, there cannot be enough stress for practice. Allow your skillset to drive what you create. For example, if the illustration is your passion, draw a sketch that represents your style, if you are a writer, publish a creative blog and get a response. Go get it should be in your head all the time! g) Presentation: What you present for yourself in your resume and interviews is a reflection of the work that you are capable of doing. Therefore, ensure that if you want a creative career you are showcasing that aspect of yourself well in both your written and presentation. The more you showcase your ability to do the right kin d of creation, the better the chances of you landing yourself a career in the creative space. Female Train Driver Roles Addressing The Gender Imbalance

Female Train Driver Roles Addressing The Gender Imbalance The UK rail industry is a traditionally male-dominated sector. Over the years, an alarming imbalance has developed in the number of females employed by the UK Train Operating Companies, and now TOCs are taking steps to change this. Various rail companies have set up campaigns to help address the male/female train driver imbalance, and these are being implemented at this very moment. The Female Train Driver ImbalanceThe male/female train driver imbalance within the rail industry is a tricky subject, and there are a huge variety of reasons as to why this is the case. It’s been suggested by some people that the lack of women within the industry is down to male managers who have a preference for hiring men, and the sheer lack of support if you are a female train driver in Scotland particularly has been used as evidence of this. A more nuanced reason for the imbalance could be down to the actual language used by recruiters and application forms. Research suggests that certain elements of rail industry jobs are being described in a way that specifically makes them sound as if they are more suited/geared towards male applicants, than female, thus having the effect that female applicants are put off from applying.Likewise, there is a perception that jobs within the rail industry are typically viewed as physically demanding. Whether female applicants are put off by these roles, or managers within the industry believe that male applicants would be more suitable, is largely subjective, but the fact remains that there is a gender imbalance and steps need to be taken to address it.More Female Train DriversSouthern Railway have already been making strides in reducing the imbalance, and have increased the number of trainee female drivers in the organisation by over 12% in the past year alone. Southeastern Railways, which delivers rail services to areas such as Kent and London, have welcomed the initiative. As of 2018, less than 5% of South Eastern’s drivers are female, but the aim is to increase the number of female applicants by at least 35% before 2021. Of the overall percentage, just 51 of the drivers at South Eastern are female, and to tackle this Southeastern are introducing new schemes and plans designed to encourage more female application.Elsewhere, Greater Anglia Railways have affirmed the views expressed by Southeastern. Like Southeastern, less than 5% of the drivers at Greater Anglia are women, and in response to this they have produced a brand-new internal recruitment campaign â€" designed to help and encourage women currently working at the company to progress and become train drivers. The problems for Greater Anglia don’t stop there, with just 22% of its employees overall being female. Luckily, this is something they are pushing to change, and as a result we should start seeing improvements very soon.Network Rail are also getting involved, and are taking steps to point out the benefits of working in the rail industry in schools. By re ducing gender stereotyping, and making the rail industry more accessible to girls and women, the hope is that by 2021 the UK rail industry will better reflect the rest of the world’s workforce â€" and there will be a far more equal balance between male and female staff. Do You Have a Vacation Hobby?

Do You Have a Vacation Hobby? If you've been given a resume that includes hobbies and interests, it may be a good idea to clarify them. These are places where an interviewer can catch you with your foot in your mouth, and most people don't even realize that they have them listed. Let's take a look at some of the things that you should try to avoid on your resume.Activities: Many people forget to list the activities that they enjoy doing. We all know that we like to get outside and we would much rather go for hikes than sit in front of the TV. However, many of us also enjoy spending time in the kitchen making food or cleaning the house. Even if these things don't fall under our hobbies and interests, we still have to list them on the resume.Hobbies and interests are important, but it's important to also list them as 'Other.' If you love to play poker, for example, you can include this. The only thing that you need to be careful about is if you don't remember the name of the game you pl ay when you were younger. In that case, you could simply tell the interviewer that you played billiards when you were a kid.Education: Don't forget to list your degree, or even if you don't have one, where you earned it, in particular the name of the specific school where you earned it. For example, if you earned a graduate degree from Harvard University, don't forget to list the specific name of the university. Even if you graduated from a community college, listing the name of the school can help your interviewer to find out how many years you've been out of school.References: When you're submitting your resume, don't forget to include references. This is very important because your references may just be one of the most important factors that will determine whether you get the job or not. Evenif you've worked for the same company for a while, your references can be a big difference maker. So it's a good idea to list all of your references on your resume.Charitable Giving: If you really feel strongly about something, why not list it as your hobbies and interests? For example, if you enjoy writing, why not mention that you are a book reviewer for your local library? Even if you can't think of anything that you enjoy doing with a group of people, it's still a good idea to list something as a hobby or a particular interest that you can share with others.Travel: Some people enjoy spending time out of the country. For example, if you want to spend some time in New Zealand, why not mention that in your hobbies and interests? Even if you enjoy being on the beach every weekend, listing that on your resume can be useful because potential employers may think you have traveled a lot, which can be a good indicator that you've been abroad to enjoy yourself.Activities that you enjoy in general are a great way to bring up a hobby or interest on your resume. If you can't think of anything that you're passionate about, you can still list it under the more general category. Y ou may be surprised at what your interviewer will be more inclined to consider your hobby or interest when you start listing them.
